The European Mayor II: Political Leaders in the Changing Context of Local Democracy

Political leadership at the local level has gained more and more interest in the scholarly and political debate during the last 20 years. The planned research will make a contribution to this debate by referring to a survey on mayors of cities with more than 10,000 inhabitants in 31 European countries carried out from the end of 2014 to the end of 2015, looking at the results concerning  the role of European cities and their leaders in realizing European values. The main research questions that will be addressed in this phase in a comparative way between countries (or country groups) as well as over time (i.e. based particularly on a similar previous survey on mayors from 2002 to 2004) concern the local conditions of enforcement of the principles of social cohesion, citizens’ participation, urban and environmental quality; and the local trends in the realization of the European model of governance (interpretation of the private-public partnerships, of the notion of accountability, of multi-level cooperation).
